A Certified Legal Nurse Consultant is a registered nurse who uses existing expertise as a healthcare professional plus specialized CLNC® training to consult on medical-related cases.. Nowhere else can an attorney find this level of cost-effective expertise for reviewing medical records and understanding the terminology and subtleties of the healthcare system. A CLNC® consultant bridges that gap in the attorney's knowledge. While the attorney is the expert on legal issues, the Certified Legal Nurse Consultant is the expert on nursing, the healthcare system and its inner workings.
- Screen cases for merit
- Define applicable standards of care
- Define deviations from, and adherences to, the applicable standards of care
- Assess alleged damages and/or injuries, and identify possible pre-existing conditions
- Identify factors that caused or contributed to alleged damages/injuries
- Organize, tab, and paginate medical records
- Summarize, translate and interpret medical records
- Identify and recommend potential defendants
- Conduct literature searches and integrate the literature and standards into the case analysis
- Research and analyze the validity and reliability of research studies relied on by all parties
- Identify and review relevant medical records, hospital policies and procedures, other essential documents and other tangible items
- Expand the attorney’s medical library
- Interview plaintiff and defense clients, key witnesses and experts
- *Consult with healthcare providers
- Identify types of testifying experts needed
- Locate and interface with expert witnesses
- Communicate with potential testifying experts
- Analyze and compare expert witness reports and other work products
- Serve as liaison between attorney and healthcare providers, testifying experts, parties, witnesses and other consultants
- Prepare interrogatories
- Review and draft responses to various legal documents and correspondence for the attorney’s signature
- Assist in exhibit preparation
- Assist in preparation of deposition and trial questions
- Review, analyze and summarize depositions, including past testimony
- Attend depositions, trials, review panels and arbitration and mediation hearings
- Help prepare witnesses and experts for deposition and trial
- Develop written reports for use as study tools by the attorney
- Coordinate and attend IMEs (independent medical exams)
- Develop life care plans
- Coordinate and assist in facilitating focus groups and mock trials
